Four dead, two missing as passenger van falls into river in Gilgit

GILGIT Four people were killed, while two others were missing after a passenger van plunged into the Indus River in Gilgit on Monday, rescuers and police said.

The incident happened at seven in the morning near Sasi area of the Haramosh valley.

Police said a van carrying tourists from Punjab’s Rajanpur lost control owing to the driver’s error and subsequently plunged into the Indus River.

After getting alerted, rescue teams rushed to the scene and recovered mobile phones, a gas cylinder, and men’s shoes from the spot.

The family was travelling from Skardu to Gilgit in separate vehicles. One of the cars made it all the way to Jaglot while the other met with an accident near Sasi, Haramosh and plunged into the river.

Rescuers recovered four bodies and were searching for the missing passengers.
