ISLAMABAD: The federal government has decided to introduce amendments in laws governing the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to limit its powers.
The cabinet committee has given nod for this purpose, it emerged Tuesday. According to the proposed amendments, the status of the minister will be taken back from the chairman of the commission.
The laws governing HEC affairs will now be approved by the Ministry of Education, while the executive director of the body will also be appointed by the government.
The amendments are expected to be presented before the cabinet later this week for final approval.
On December 4, the commission invited innovative start-ups owned by students, alumni, faculty members, or researchers from universities to apply for a grant.
In a statement, the HEC noted the Innovator Seed Fund Grant — envisioned for the development of innovation and start-up ecosystem in Pakistan — is a flagship initiative of the commission under the Higher Education Development in Pakistan Project (HEDP).
