Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook, has recently taken up the hobby of creating his own 3D printed dresses. Not only that, he also has learnt to sew. In a series of Instagram posts posted early on a Sunday morning, Zuckerberg shared photographs of his daughters wearing his innovative creations. The first few frames focus on different patterns, colours and designs of the dresses worn by his daughters, while the last frame showcases a wholesome photograph of his daughter.

Sharing the details of his new project, he captioned the post, “I have a passion for building things and have recently started designing and 3D printing dresses with my girls. Here are a few of my projects from the last month… (and yes, I had to learn how to sew).”

Tech entrepreneur Eva Chen commented on his post saying that his dresses could be Met Gala-ready, making some of his followers curious as to what kind of printer Zuckerberg was using to create such innovative designs and the material they were made of.

One user pointed out that the dresses resembled Prada’s chainmail sequinned minidress, while another commented, “Those look like the most uncomfortable dresses ever made.”

3D printing is a process that uses computer-aided design (CAD) to create objects layer-by-layer. Also known as additive manufacturing, it can be done through a variety of techniques in which material is deposited, joined or solidified under computer control. According to Fortune Business Insights, the 3D printing industry is estimated to reach a value of $84 billion by 2029.

One of the main advantages of 3D printing is the ability to produce complex shapes or geometries which otherwise would be impossible to construct by hand.

Moreover, because of its potential to optimise the production process, customisation and cost, 3D printing has expanded the horizons of what is possible in fashion.

On March 24 of this year, Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan welcomed their third daughter into the world. They named her Aurelia. The couple already has two daughter, August who is five years old and Max who is seven.

Zuckerberg had announced the news of his wife’s pregnancy with a heartwarming photo, in which he wrote, “Lots of love. Happy to share that Max and August are getting a new baby sister next year.”
